Why Skin Wrinkles

Everyone wrinkles eventually as they progress through a normal lifespan. It’s been said that nothing is inevitable except for death and taxes, but wrinkles might well be added to that short list, too. And, naturally, the place where wrinkles are most obvious is right on our face. Heredity does play a role in whether your face will be only lightly touched by wrinkles, or whether you will wind up looking like a relief map of the Badlands. However, heredity is not necessarily the last word as pertains to wrinkles, and many wrinkles can be avoided if you take care of your skin while you are still young.

The Causes of Wrinkling

Quite a number of factors will contribute to the development of skin wrinkles and while some are unavoidable, and are what the scientific community refers to as intrinsic aging – you simply cannot avoid growing old as long as you are alive – other factors are called extrinsic aging, and these are the ones you can keep on a leash if you make an effort to do so.

Dermatologists have determined that nearly 80% of skin wrinkling can be laid at the feet of the sun. The obsession of people with pale skin to get a tan has led not only to an increase in sun-related wrinkles, but also to the various forms of skin cancer. The sun’s rays can actually penetrate the skin to damage the elastin and collagen which provide our skin with flexibility and the ability to ‘bounce back’. 

Acne scarring can contribute to the development of wrinkles. Skin that has been damaged and pitted is actually weaker and more fragile than skin that has not been harmed by acne. Often the dermis layer, where cell regeneration occurs will be damaged by severe cases of acne. Acne also damages the epidermis, making it more susceptible to wrinkling.

Along with smoking, drinking alcohol can also result in premature wrinkling of the skin. The reason that this occurs is twofold: alcohol use causes dehydration, which deprives your skin of the moisture it needs to stay healthy; alcohol also causes the skin to become thinner than it would ordinarily be so that it will be more likely to be affected by wrinkle-producing forces such as the sun.

Excessive environmental dryness will also cause the skin to wrinkle. While this problem is most apparent during winter when most of us are living in a closed environment with a heating system, it can occur for those living in Mediterranean or desert climates. If you find yourself reaching for lip balm, your skin is probably too dry.

Taking Charge of Your Skin Care

Nothing can be done about your genetic background, of course, but you can definitely take steps to control outside forces. None of the suggestions below are difficult or expensive, and can be done by anyone interested in keeping their face looking young for as long as possible.

Use a moisturizer regardless of what skin type you have. Moisturizers help to hold moisture in, and form a protective barrier against dryness. Oily skin will also benefit from using a moisturizer, and lotions are recommended for this skin type. Dry or sensitive skin needs something with an oil base to provide better protection.

Preventing acne scarring may not be entirely avoidable, but instituting a program for dealing with acne as soon as pimples appear can help to keep your skin healthier. Taking care of acne prone skin can be more difficult than otherwise, but if you read this, you will find out some ways to control acne outbreaks. 

Even if you have oily skin, it is never advisable to wash your face more than two times a day, in the morning when you get up, and before you go to bed. Washing more frequently than this will remove too much natural oil from the skin and make it more likely to develop wrinkles. Use a mild soap, tepid water, and pat dry (right after washing is a great time to apply your favorite moisturizer).

Stay out of the sun. If you must go outside during the hottest days of the summer, try to avoid going out between 10 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon – this is when the sun’s rays are the most intense. Your first line of protection will be a hat, one with a large brim, and long sleeved shirts. Even if you are dress properly for the sun, use a sunscreen with a high SBF number for added protection.

Dry house syndrome can be alleviated by the use of a humidifier during the winter. This will help to raise the humidity level of your home and help prevent your skin from drying out.

Taking a little extra effort and time to treat your face kindly will ultimately pay off in fewer wrinkles and a more attractive appearance.
