bags

Many years ago, I used to discover promising brands and products through blogs and instagram accounts of famous personalities. In Filipino parlance, budol finds. Today, my source of budol shifted to You Tube and Tiktok.

Recently, I discovered Eve & Adam from both my Tiktok and Instagram accounts. They introduce themselves as a local producer of bags for women. After stalking the brand and reviews for several months, I gave in. I purchased this Anika Baguette Sling Bag through their Shopee account.

Crafted by Filipino Artisans: A Review of Eve and Adam’s Vegan Leather Bag

Many years ago, I used to discover promising brands and products through blogs and instagram accounts of famous personalities. In Filipino parlance, budol finds. Today, my source of budol shifted to You Tube and Tiktok.

Recently, I discovered Eve & Adam from both my Tiktok and Instagram accounts. They introduce themselves as a local producer of bags for women. After stalking the brand and reviews for several months, I gave in. I purchased this Anika Baguette Sling Bag through their Shopee account.

It wasn't a planned purchase. But as always, the bag caught my attention. It looks like the Goyard St. Louis tote bag. While I still cannot afford a Goyard, other similar bags can work for now. Christy Ng is a Malaysian brand that offers shoes and bags. I discovered the brand through ad placements from my Facebook account. After a few clicks and social media algorithm, all those local Instagram based sellers appeared in my suggestions.

I first encountered the Mochilla bag from a low key blogger I follow. My attention was caught by the colorful knitted drawstring bag. In my mind, it might be a locally produced bag. I later discovered a local reseller and to my surprise, the bag originated all the way from Colombia.

Wayuu and Mochilla Bags in the Philippines

Originally called as the Malacanang of the North, I prefer to call the place as the famous house at the lakeside. It served as the palace, office and house of the former president and his family. The place has a long and complicated history. Much of this was attributed to the legal cases pursued against the former president and his family.

The house was grand but did not impress me well. I appreciate old structures, wood and the capiz windows. But the entire structure does not suit my preferences. The only thing I appreciate, the view of the lake. The lake was relaxing and to some extent, breathtaking.

I've been savoring my two-week break from work. I just arrived home after meeting some good old friends. I have a lot in my mind now. All of a sudden I feel pressured, bombarded, frustrated and at the same time, sad. This is the least I wanted to feel, especially after having a great time during Christmas. Part of the continuing phase of growing up as an adult, I believe. Whatever this maybe, I hope I'll be able to overcome it.

When in Ilocos : The Famous House at the Lakeside

I have been noticing the rack of Hellolulu Bags from Rustan's Gateway branch for the longest time. I didn't bother to check because it is surely expensive. Most of the bags I see are also in the form of backpacks. I don't often use backpacks these days, except when I had those rare overnight trips.

In one random day of April, I was able to leave work early. The rare times the train ride was a breeze. I don't have any freelance work to attend. Time was on my side. I decided to walk around the mall for a while. I noticed the magic red flag at Rustan's, SALE. I checked out the items on sale and discovered that all Hellolulu bags were sold 20% off its original price. Looks like a tempting deal, but surprise or surprises... I went home with no paper bag on my hands. Although I have to admit, I was starting to like their bags.

Weeks after, I decided I wanted my own Hellolulu. Unfortunately, Rustan's promotional sale was over. I checked out other boutiques offering Hellolulu and discovered Urbanize in Gateway Mall too. I was willing to purchase because the sales clerk told me that the bag was still on sale. Deal! But when the sales clerk verified with their main office, we discovered that it was back on its regular price. I went back to Rustan's even though I will be able to acquire for the same price. Rustan's was a better choice because of the opportunity to purchase via zero interest installment. True enough, the price of the bag qualified for the installment program. Added to this, Rustan's customer service is always way way way better.

I purchased the tote version or the Nori Slim Brief. I admit, the bag is expensive... relative to my purchasing capacity and payslip :p When I checked its features and materials, I have to say that I got a good deal.

The best thing I love about the bag is the compartments. It has a huge back pocket that can store small documents to regular must haves like your coin purse, train card, to a thin pocket book. The front side of the bag provides another space for easy access of your other set of must haves. An added tool, (as seen on the 6th photo) the bag provides a safe and sturdy key holder.

My appreciation to the front and back compartments intensified because I have problems with bags designed with flaps and zippers. I hate the inconvenience of lifting the flap and pulling the zipper to access my things. The spacious front and back compartments made it for me. My important items are secured in the space with zipper, while I have external compartments that provides easier access for items I often need.

When I examined the main internal part of the bag, I was surprised to see a safe compartment for a laptop. The bag can fit either my 11.5 inches MacBook Air or my Acer V5-132p laptop. I initially thought that the laptop might eat up the entire space of the bag. Surprisingly, the inside part of the of the bag can still accommodate. My foldable umbrella, portable mini electric fan, hygiene kit, and pocket book can still fit. Mini pockets are also provided inside for small and important items.

While the bag can accommodate a lot of things, my other concern was the weight. The bag itself is very lightweight and sturdy. Have you ever had the bag that already feels heavy even without your stuff inside yet? Hellolulu Bags are surprisingly lightweight and pardon the comparison, I love its material than the Herschel bags.

I was also able to road test the bag against stains. I accidentally left a pen mark and oil stains. With the help of my mother, the stain was easily removed by water and a small amount of detergent. Lastly, it might surprise you but the bag's fabric is made of water resistant material. Yay for rainy days!

Aesthetics was the main reason why I was driven to purchase my first Hellolulu. I love its Japanese inspired structure. I love that the bag looks like a lunch pouch or a backpack, only to discover that it was a tote bag. I can use it as a messenger bag with the long strap or simply rely on the short handles, making it feel like almost a handbag.

I'm writing this post still bearing that huge smile on my face. There's no question about Cath Kidston making me the happiest. There are other reasons that made my trip to Cath Kidston more memorable. Prior to my visit, I was able to meet two of my favorite bloggers. Hi Mother E of The Pseudoshrink and Leah of The Bright Spot! Our brunch deserves a separate blog post. :) After our meeting in Vanilla Cupcake, Leah and her husband AJ dropped me off to the actual store. Nahihiya ako pero ang saya ko lang! As someone who rarely visits Makati and BGC, it would take a lot of effort to navigate directions. But Leah made everything easier for me. Thank you Leah, I will always remember your kindness. :)

To those who want to visit Cath Kidston in BGC via commute, you can take the BGC Bus that travels the East Route. Alight from the 30th Street or the 4th stop and walk towards the 9th Avenue or the Bonifacio High Street. An alternative is walking straight from Market Market to Serendra. Active Fun's building is approximately two blocks away from Serendra Park.

Since I live far away from BGC, visiting Cath Kidston is quite a hassle. Hence, I wasn't able to take advantage of their 20% discount on their opening week. In a way, this became a blessing because I was able to control my shopaholic hormones. :D So much of my introduction, i'll let the photos relate everything.

I'm finally here! I'm facing a real Cath Kidston store.

A home filled with Cath Kidston items, why not... minus the hefty price tag. Yes, prices are quite steep for some items. A mug costs Php 599 per piece?!?

Not for sale ;) but I'm loving even the interior design of the store

Buffet of wallets!

London Buses, one of my favorite Cath Kidston prints

Day bags!!!!

The classic book bags whose size and material I underestimated. The book bag is so big and sturdy.

And this overnight bag too.

There are a lot of beautiful items that made it in my wish list. Unfortunately, the price tag never fails to become the antagonist of my story. On the average, a bag would range from Php 2,500 to 5,000. If my estimates are correct, you can check the GBP prices on Cath Kidston's main site. Use the conversion rate of Php 76 and add roughly Php 500 to 800. Not bad, considering that shipping rate from UK would land around Php 1,500.

Not that I'm discouraging purchase from the local store, but the cost effective way to acquire a bag is through the online sale in UK. To dilute the hefty shipping fee, you can pool orders with friends and relatives. This is what Mother E, Leah and I have been and will continue to do. (Yes, the #CathKidstonSisterhood will continue despite the presence of a local branch.) The disadvantage of this, you are limited to the designs and styles. You are left with whatever collections are available for sale.

Since prices are quite steep for me, I limited my purchase to one bag ;)

My first Cath Kidston book bag :)
Hello to the last week of November! In a few more weeks, it will be my favorite time of the year again. For my US friends, they still have thanksgiving to look forward. In my case, I look forward to the possibility of Black Friday Deals from my favorite US based online shops. Hahaha But seriously, someone has to get me off shopping. Yes, I'm guilty. I made advanced purchases already. This stress busting habit is not doing any good for my struggling wallet. So before my 13th month pay totally vanishes, I have to prevent myself from going inside my greatest temples of temptations. No more trips to the shopping mall for me.

I have an unexpected work for next week. I have to report to another place. I just hope everything will turn out well. I cannot afford to mess up for the Bigger Boss. Honestly, the past week was spent almost worrying about this. I have this greatest talent of immersing myself to unnecessary stress, which later leads to either stress eating or shopping. ;)  Before facing another week, let me recount the few beautiful things I've encountered.

Graham Balls - My favorite snack at the workplace. If only I have interest in baking... in the first place, can anyone tell if this really needs baking?

Slammin Burgers - Whenever I had the chance to drop by Trinoma, I will surely have a take out from one of my favorite burger chains.

Surprise from my fruit box -A very unusual selection for my daily dose of healthy treats

Bagaholic Hormones - I'm weak, sorry. Hahaha But this has to end my advanced Xmas purchases. My shopaholic hormones was fulfilled but my thrift hormones are suffering. For the record, this is currently the most expensive bag I own. Yes, I bought a bag again.

I'm beginning to love Kamiseta again. - I studied in an all girls school whose uniform remains unchanged since its foundation. I've worn ruffles and jumper skirts for 10 years. I guess this has intensified my love for ruffled blouses.

Relic by Fossil Sling Bag - Scored this from a neighborhood bazaar. I love the colors and patterns.

Hi Kate! - The only thing I can afford from Kate Spade is their Daycation Bon Shopper Bag. I don't know if I can still purchase another bag from this favorite brand. I have to stay away from the internet on Friday!!!

Till we meet again Fr. T! - In the middle of the week, the entire workplace community attended the neclorogical service for our dearest Fr. T. It was my first time to see the entire congregation gathered and united for his final blessing. The kids and the kids at heart will miss you forever Fr. T!

The shopaholic hormones attacked me again. Because I have been drowning with expected and unexpected work, I decided to unwind by doing some online window shopping. The online browsing turned to real shopping as evidenced by this post. :)

I discovered Ni-QUA from another low profile blogger. She purchased the same tote I will be reviewing and as expected, I fell in love with the classic and minimalistic style. Cliche as it may sound, I found beauty in the bag's simplicity. It took me restless hours to decide whether to purchase. I'm being held back because I've been excessively shopping for bags this year. I have another bag waiting to arrive and I have plans with Cath Kidston's last quarter sale. More importantly, the bag is quite expensive. Despite all the valid reasons that prevented me to purchase the bag, my shopaholic hormones overpowered me. :) Hence, as always, there's another "bag post" documented here.

I purchased Ni-QUA's medium sized Manico bag. Can I just say that the bag is so perfect! The bag is made of genuine cow leather that is so soft. It's way different from my other real and synthetic leather bags that are usually hard and heavy. The Manico bag is so light and the smell of the authentic leather is really intoxicating.

Proof of real leather!

The bag has unfortunately no inner lining which I appreciate because I can always feel the real leather. The bag also comes with a hidden magnetic clasp.

Despite being made of soft material, the bag can stand on its own. I believe this is a sign of excellent design and craftsmanship.

Defining beauty in simplicity

The bag comes in a 5 -inches handle drop. The handle is also made of light yet sturdy material.

The bag is perfect except for one minor area that somehow disappointed me. I had issues with the delayed shipping which wasn't Ni-QUA's fault. The not-so-famous shipping company took around 5 days to send the parcel. I'm counting weekends because I believe that courier companies are obliged to deliver even on weekends. The person at the workplace who received my bag also posted some inefficiency. More importantly, I'm not impressed with the packaging of the bag. The photo above shows the actual bag when it arrived. It was wrapped in transparent plastic and was forced to fit in a small felt paper bag. In my opinion, expensive and sensitive items should be likewise be treated with expensive and sophisticated packaging.

I was expecting a padded envelope, box or a dust bag that will protect the bag in the course of the delivery. I relayed my sentiments to Ni-QUA and I never received any reply at all. :) I apologize if I sound too demanding but my years in Corporate Planning gave me another perspective to complaints and suggestions. Nevertheless, the packaging is just a minor issue. The bag maybe expensive but I don't regret purchasing it. I'm looking forward to purchase another Manico bag that comes in red or orange. Hopefully, the packaging will improve and there will be no more shipping problems.
