Today, we laid my last grandparent to rest. My Grandpa, who everyone fondly called Lolo, was reunited with my Lola (Grandma) on her birthday.

The last years of  Lolo involved countless trips to the hospital. It started with eyesight problems. He developed problems in his digestive system. Later, his excretory system was affected. He underwent a sensitive operation two years ago. He recovered only to suffer from stroke last year. We celebrated his 93rd birthday last November and the past months meant seeing him deteriorate. Though we live in the same city, I rarely see my Lolo. It was my cousins, uncles and aunties who ensured his safety and comfort.

Last Thursday, I fell asleep in our living room after a long day at work. Around 10 pm, my phone has been receiving endless calls and text messages. My cousins were looking for my Dad. Lolo was at his worst stage. The entire family spent the last hours of the day until Lolo held his last breath. It was a painful moment for the family. But in my heart, it will always be one of the most heart warming experiences with my family.

It was Sunday night and as expected, we were greeted with the flock of customers. The place was jampacked. This may look inconvenient on our part but like what everyone says, a populated restaurant is an indicator of great food. 

The menu is quite limited. On the positive side, this makes the selection process easier. I decided to have t-bone steak. While waiting for our orders, I took time to explore the place. I thought the entire restaurant was limited to the air-conditioned area. The place extends to a backyard that offers al fresco dining experience. If given the chance, I would have chosen the wider space outside. I learned that the restaurant also allows private events in the secluded backyard.

It took around 15 minutes before our orders arrived. Don't be deceived with the small size of my t-bone steak. What I thought as a thin and shallow steak came with overflowing strips of tender meat. While my cousin's baby back ribs is no doubt, filled with the much needed taste and servings. 

All value meals come with unlimited rice and drinks. So given the price tag, I believe the prices are more than reasonable. Same story goes with their customer service. Despite the bulk of customers, the service crews were accommodating and responsive. And the interiors of the place, I love the industrial theme! Everything is instagram worthy.

This week marked the real ending of my documentation project. Our President and CEO finally received the much awaited recognition from the highest office in the country. The entire day was filled with first time experiences. The last time I saw the highest office was ages ago. I was in fifth grade and had the chance to visit its museum.

I tried my best to recall when did the project start. I traced my last posts and this was the earliest I encountered. It was two years in the making. We already learned the success of our project last June.  Fast forward now, it took months before the awarding ceremonies was scheduled. I wasn't expecting to be included in the list of employees joining the ceremonies. As far as I know, only the vice presidents and managers are entitled. Barely a few days before the event, my superior informed us of the event. Panic mode on, I have nothing to wear. The first instruction was to wear Filipiniana. The last minute, my superior made other plans. I already purchased a Filipiniana inspired shawl. I dressed down and rummaged my cabinet for the lone LBD (little BLUE dress). Setting aside the little stress, all the wait and worries since 2013 were worth it. I can claim that I have done something good in my life. This also proves what an older friend told me many years ago. The Big Boss above does not deny prayers and wishes with the best intentions.

Before tears accompany me again, here are the other beautiful things that made my week. 


Meeting one of my favorite bloggers, our role model for frugality!!! Thank you Edel of Life in Manila. Edel works with the office handling the event. I messaged her a few days before. At that time, I wasn't sure if I will be included in the list of guests. I took chance and everything just happened. Too bad because I didn't have any camera with me. It was restricted for guests, which I completely understood. But I was quite lucky ;) Edel saved the day. So I had a little remembrance posted from her Instagram account. The rare times you can see me looking decent on a dress. Thanks Edel for devoting some time and for this present too!

Immediately after the awarding ceremonies, I thought I will be asked to return to the office. We were treated to a celebratory lunch. All the more I was surprised because we went to La Cocina de Tita Moning, the restaurant where Edel dabbles as a tour guide. 


I was on a semi-loser mode here. Imagine being brought to a very beautiful place without any camera. I never bothered to bring my camera because it was restricted during the awarding ceremonies anyway. I only had my lousy camera phone. Worst, my phone's battery was beginning to drain. These were the few captures I made.


I swear, the place looks better than my poor photos. 


The living room is the most expensive part of the house because of the paintings!


It felt like Christmas! I was treated to a five course meal with the highest people at the workplace. It was a rare and I believe, once in a lifetime opportunity for me. 

One of the best things I'm looking forward this week is the long weekend. An extended weekend break is the best! I had a great start with my grandfather, auntie and cousins. 


Marikina Hits! - Out of nowhere, my cousins treated us for merienda last Friday. The man in the middle is my grandfather who's turning 91 before the year ends. Can weekends be forever like this?


As I was cleaning my things, I remembered having this book from Bobbi Brown. It is filled with inspiring messages and stories about women. If laziness will not attack me, I might write a review about this coffee table book.

And as always, long weekend is all about great food starting with forever favorite, Becky's Swiss Chocolate Cake. :) 

I checked my calendar and realized that this will be the last Sunday of September. How fast time flies. I'm facing the last few months of 2015. Hopefully, the next months will be filled with better and happier memories ahead.

Weekend Rain and Misty Windows - This weather! The rain and the colder weather gave me more reasons to appreciate this weekend at home. A few of my colleagues reported for work for a major event. I may have failed to witness a significant milestone at the workplace but weekends like this? There's nothing to regret about spending a quiet and relaxing weekend with the family.

Grey and Bailey - #StopYulin I cannot understand how some groups can find fulfillment in slaughtering helpless dogs and cats. Even Pope Francis posted the stand of the Catholic Church. 

Define weekends - A bag of chicacorn from Binondo is another sinful way of spending weekends with the family.

Rainy days and movies - Perfect treat! Colder weather, pajamas, cotton sheets and blanket and reminiscing good old days with a favorite movie. Anyone who can guess one of my all time favorite movie? :)


Belgian Waffles! - I got this as soon as I saw it in the rack of the nearby 7-11 store. My verdict though? Too sweet for my taste buds. 

Something from the mail - Thank you The Candy Shop for making me happy even just for a while. 

While waiting for my Roger Vivier ... - Hahaha Aside from Valentino's rock studs, I've been dreaming of owning a pair of this ballerina flats. While everything is still a work in progress, I settled to this pair from Staccato. 



The family that eats together, stays together - This was thanksgiving lunch with the family a few days ago. My cousin who was mistakenly diagnosed with a serious heart ailment has been healed through second opinion. Thank you for leading our family to a smarter and better cardiologist.




The photos were taken from my friends recent trekking experience to Mt. Pinatubo. I lent my camera and sought permission to publish these photos. 


The majestic Mt.Pinatubo! The volcanic crater that turned to a beautiful lake years after. Give me a few more years to shed off my lbs :), I will have my own Mt. Pinatubo experience.

I don't have friends, I got family. Fast and Furious fans, relate? I can't find the right words to start my post so I'm borrowing  Dominic Toretto's famous line. Much of the beautiful things that happened this week was brought by my FAMILY. Thankful indeed!

The long weekend was a blessing. As always, the broke back mountain in me chose to stay home. In the middle of the week, a member of the family was suspected to have serious heart problems. In God's grace and through second opinion, it was discovered that everything was simply caused by severe muscle pain. The good news came in perfect timing during my cousin's birthday. The holiday was just filled with happiness and thanksgiving. 

Over the past days, here are other few beautiful things that made my week.


Decisions, decisions, decisions - Where will this ever stop? :)

Mailbox surprise - It was only Terra who keeps on sending me postcards with this elegant wreath stamp. I thought I received two letters from Terra. (Thanks Terra for the cute card!) Turns out, I received a card from one of the first bloggers I ever met.

Thank you Kelley! - I will never get tired of reading your letter. It's one of the best letters I have received in my lifetime. You never fail to inspire me. You are indeed a friend, older sister and a mother in the blogosphere. Your letter came in just when I needed some encouragement.

Fun Fab Fam - I enjoyed the simple road trip we had in our hometown. I can't wait for our next escapade, even if it means eating out in a new restaurant around. 



Robinsons Magnolia - This has to be one of my favorite malls in Manila. I love the relatively quiet and lesser crowd. The old and boring person in me further loves the entire neighborhood in New Manila.

Kiddie trains :) - To be a kid again! I have been fascinated with trains. But please don't count the inefficiency of the MRT and the LRT. Hahaha

One of my dreams is to own a unit from Pine Crest New Manila. I love the architecture and the atmosphere of having Baguio or Tagaytay in Manila. 

The Ghost Chair - Thanks to Mother E and her friends for leading me to the right path. :) This is just one of the many steps in building my own office at home. Big thanks also goes to my Dad who took time to drive me to Robinsons Magnolia.

A little back story about this chair, I was suppose to get the Herschel bag I've been wanting to own. I had a little freelance earning this week and I was planning to acquire the bag. Good thing, Mother E informed me that my dream chair is on sale. The price? It was almost the same as the Herschel bag. Which one to purchase? I chose the item that will seem to go a long way. One that would always remind me that I once had an accomplished freelance work. I believe I made the right decision. I want to have more freelance works because I'm considering acquiring another ghost chair. :) Addicting? Yes! I want to have another piece to replace our dining chairs.... to which my Mother doesn't agree. Hahahaha And by the way, I'm not giving up the Herschel bag. Hahahaha 


The wonders of wood!

One of a kind Tree House - We visited this nice place in my hometown. I love the house's architecture and the overlooking space that served as a tree house. I also appreciate the mismatched wooden chairs.

Pan de Amerikana - One of the reasons why Marikina is turning as a great food hub in the metro. If you are in Marikina, don't forget to drop by Pan de Amerikana for the best pandesal. Check out my previous post about the place here. 

Another wooden house - This reminds me of the classic American house in the countryside. Made me sing, country road take me home :)


Perfect place for pictorials - I want to have my own portrait here! Or this can be an inspiration for my future office at home.

The place from afar - I love the transparent (ala Ghost chair) Chivari chairs and the white interiors. My ambitious dream? To host a victory party or product launch of my own business here with my few close friends. 

Sweet Maddie's Place - I love the wooden details of the ceiling, mismatched chairs and the arched windows. This place is also found in my hometown, an addition to the beautiful restaurants around.

Loving my Toms ballet flats - My feet may not look perfect but this has to be best flats I've ever purchased. 



This metal details - How can you not love the intricate detailing?

Small perfect house - The first thing I noticed about this bungalow is the mail box. Most of the mailboxes I encounter are built in to the metal gates. This house managed to install a cute black mail box which I failed to capture. Aside from the mail box, I started to appreciate the house's structure. It has an extended garden, casement style windows, and the simple white and green paint that for some reason, I find it very relaxing and elegant. Whoever owns this home, apologies if I snapped a few photos. :) I love your home and I hope I'll be able to capture more photos.

This week and the past week. I thought I wouldn't be able to survive. For the first time, I had a week long leave in the middle of the year. While others would be more than thankful for the opportunity, I have a different story to tell. I admit, this is not my best time. The past days and the coming days will mean one thing: struggle. I cannot wait for the day when I can finally say, 'twas over. I can only wish for better days. 

Life may be sad and gloomy but somewhere along the way, there are some beautiful things that made my week. The dinner treat and conversation with a great colleague turned friend. The chance to sleep and wake up on my desired time. Staying home gave me the chance to eat healthier meals. Time was slow. It was supposedly a vacation, but yes I took home some work. Only to realize, I was more productive at home. I'm more than halfway with my current project. An irony I wasn't expecting, I was able to generate more ideas while working at home. Makes me think, I maybe suited for this career. It's fun to have colleagues but the unnecessary stress and pressure from them, no thanks. Hahaha 



Beautiful Mess - I always find a beautiful mess on excessively stamped passports. My first passport (right) already expired and had four countries and stories to keep. On my last trip, I was quite surprised with the new practice in Hong Kong and Macau. No more stamps! I was instead issued pieces of papers that contained all the immigration details. No more beautifully messy passports :( All I have are those pieces of vulnerable thermal papers, whose printed information will surely be erased in a few weeks.

All natural pepper from Father - The idle parcel of land owned by my Auntie has become the venue of my Father's favorite past time. He has been engaged to some planting activities. I believe a significant part of what we have at home came from my Father's green thumb. :) Yes to organic and healthy living. 

Stuffed Grilled Squid - Thank you to my Mother for giving in to my request. The lonesome daughter is more than happy to be spoiled.

Ferrero Collection - Perks of being a good neighbor! Hahahaha Not me, but my parents. I love it that we live in a community where my parents are still familiar with families in the neighborhood. But I believe, there is something wrong with me when I don't feel "tempted" with this "temptation." Life... and all the grown up issues!

And because I was home the entire week, I was able to catch up with Asia's Got Talent. 


Sporty Spice!!! - I was more than happy when I discovered that Mel.C was one of judges at Asia's Got Talent. My only regret, I missed several episodes of the first season. My wish is that there will be Season 2 soon and please, retain the same set of judges. David Foster, Vanness Wu, Anggun and Mel C. (yes I still prefer calling her Mel C. than Melanie) were the best for me. And another request, please don't remove Rovilson Fernandez and my crush, Marc Nelson!!!!

Pinoy Pride!!! -El Gamma Penumbra for the win!

Beautiful Sunday # 160 - Struggling but Surviving

This week and the past week. I thought I wouldn't be able to survive. For the first time, I had a week long leave in the middle of the year. While others would be more than thankful for the opportunity, I have a different story to tell. I admit, this is not my best time. The past days and the coming days will mean one thing: struggle. I cannot wait for the day when I can finally say, 'twas over. I can only wish for better days. 

Life may be sad and gloomy but somewhere along the way, there are some beautiful things that made my week. The dinner treat and conversation with a great colleague turned friend. The chance to sleep and wake up on my desired time. Staying home gave me the chance to eat healthier meals. Time was slow. It was supposedly a vacation, but yes I took home some work. Only to realize, I was more productive at home. I'm more than halfway with my current project. An irony I wasn't expecting, I was able to generate more ideas while working at home. Makes me think, I maybe suited for this career. It's fun to have colleagues but the unnecessary stress and pressure from them, no thanks. Hahaha 



Beautiful Mess - I always find a beautiful mess on excessively stamped passports. My first passport (right) already expired and had four countries and stories to keep. In my mind, I still feel that summer has just started. When I checked my calendar, reality came in. One summer month down!  Most of my colleagues are already enjoying their month long "paid" leave. In my case, I still have to report everyday. Although I have a little breather because I'm forced to consume my excess vacation leave credits. My working days has been reduced to four times a week. However, upon checking my leave status last week I overlooked another set of leave credit statistics. Lucky problems? Not really. My work load has been reduced but due to other unforeseen circumstances, I have to say that this is not the best time to become absent at work.

Setting aside this uninteresting aspect of my life, here are snapshots of  my past week. 


Intramuros hits! - Intramuros is a haven for photographers and writers. Working near this area gives me a little privilege. There's just so many interesting things to blog about this historical site. More than a historical landmark, there is a residential site, informal sector activities and a lot more underrated areas to explore. Little by little, I'll try my best to showcase more interesting activities in Intramuros. 


Season ending - The ambivalence at the workplace ... It's a month of conflicting emotions because of the upcoming graduations. Once all the activities subside, all the silence start to creep in. Dark and empty hallways and the quiet grounds that used to be a chaos of different student related activities. On the contrary, it's during these quiet months when the Plumeria tree near our workstation starts to bloom. 


And here's to more quiet afternoons and summer days at the workplace.... This used to be a parking lot extension for students and employees. Given the lesser populace reporting at the workplace, there's suddenly an abundance of silence and spaces. 

This humongous grill machine - My favorite burger stand outside the workplace uses this grill machine to prepare the best cheeseburgers. 

Wai Ying - Thanks to my students J, A and L for the mini Binondo tour and dinner at Wai Ying.


While everyone craves for chocolate as their comfort food, mine is always bacon and all those fats and carbs!! Speaking of cravings, I need to lose some weight now (Like, I have always been saying this forever?!?!!) because I have achieved another record high in the weighing scale. @#$%^!

Thaicoon - A little foodie discovery after a long day at work at Lucky Chinatown in Binondo. Thanks to my friend A for giving in to my cravings. 

Chevy Burger - Hometown is love. This is another addition to my favorite burger joints. The little space didn't disappoint because they have the cheapest and tastiest burgers in my hometown. 


Supporting a blog friend - Hi Duni! I'm loving the cards I ordered from your Society 6 shop. 

Obsessed with my cousin's Japanese bike - If only I know how to bike. :) I can actually use the bike but I don't have the balance to sustain it.

Unexpected sleepovers - are the best! My reduced working days permitted me to have movie nights, sleep overs and some stupid dubsmash with these kiddies. :)

In the middle of the week, I had an unexpected reunion with my few paternal cousins. How timely  because I have been on house-work arrest over the last weeks. No movie or mall dates, just some online shopping escapades (I'm so bad), unhealthy fast-food meals, movie marathons and as always, zzzzzzz. For those who know me well, having more than 8 hours of undisturbed sleep is one important indicator of happiness. Hahaha 

A day before the presentation of my project (Thank God, I'm done) my cousin invited me for a dinner treat. It came in perfect timing because I needed those light and humorous moments. My cousin chose this small, quaint and hidden restaurant in our hometown. At that time I wasn't initially interested with the food and place. I just wanted to see my cousins and have a great time. Turns out, I was given a full treat. I had: great food + great place + great people = perfect way to end the day!!!


I was never familiar with Beeffalo despite being existent in my hometown for quite some time. Because I don't often explore my own hometown, I got lost and noticed a series of unique restaurants around. Like Beeffalo, I discovered a number of old houses being transformed to quaint restaurants. I hope this becomes a trend in Marikina. I love old houses and to make them as restaurants is both eye and stomach candy for me. :)


This has to be my favourite place in Beeffalo. I love the al fresco dining experience. What used to be a small garden was installed with small bulb lights and classic wooden benches. When I will have my own place, I will surely make something like this. A garden with wooden benches, few ornamental plants and green grass, and floating bulb lights are ideal for those late night picnics with my family.

We didn't stay in the garden, but my cousin chose the equally beautiful porch.

I failed to see the air conditioned area of the restaurant. What I know for sure though, I will still choose the al dresco dining experience when I visit Beeffalo again. And yes, Beeffalo is worth another visit.
