A few months ago, I related my attempts to reconnect with my long lost penfriends from South Korea. A few weeks after, my attempt turned out to be successful. My letter reached one of them and I was already more than happy. And because of technology, communication became easier for us. We became Facebook friends and would chat once in a while. It was also through Facebook that I discovered that my friend stayed in the Philippines for almost a year. I believe that was more than two years ago. I regret the fact that I should have reconnected with her earlier. If only I wrote to her earlier, we could have been given the opportunity to personally meet. 

Fast forward now, I discovered that my dear friend returned to the Philippines for work. I saw a familiar photo posted on her Facebook account so I decided to confirm her presence. When she said that she was indeed here, I wanted to scream OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! She's here, for real!!!!! And even though I have poor social skills, I never had second thoughts. I invited her for a meet up. We were suppose to meet around April when I had those forced leave credits. Unfortunately, there were some hindrances that came along the way. We would occasionally exchange messages and she sought my assistance for this brand of Virgin Coconut Oil that she prefers. I was quite surprised that VCO is that expensive in South Korea. I was successful in finding her preferred brand that is rarely available in most supermarkets. I wanted to personally hand out the bottles of VCO but I understand her busy schedule and priorities. But deep inside, part of me is still hoping that we would meet one of these days. She surprised me last week because she was asking if I'm free over the weekends. I never had second thoughts, I said yes!!!  And the rest was history :) 

It's for real! I have a great and beautiful friend from South Korea! Say hi to my dear friend, Jenny :) 

It took me a while to reach our meeting place. Blame the traffic from the afternoon rain. I felt stupid for making her wait. :( And since I'm meeting a South Korean friend, we have to do it inside an authentic Korean restaurant. :) I had my favorite Bibimbap and she introduced me to this Korean spicy squid with noodles. It was the best! We started talking and eating at 5 pm and before we knew it, it was already so dark outside. Haha We parted around 8 pm. Hahaha We may have exchanged letters a few times but it felt like I knew her for the longest time. I tagged my friend Anne and we somehow interviewed her about the best places to visit in South Korea. Haha 

I was surprised with the number of places Jenny has visited in the Philippines. I admire her best for being able to survive like a typical Filipino. She's a legit Filipino commuter! She takes jeepneys, UV express / FX taxis, buses to tricycle when she visits different places in the Philippines. That is real bravery!!! 

I hope this will not be our last meet up. I made a promise to Jenny. :) I have to complete the 20 bottles of VCO. Hahaha She has a few more months in the Philippines. I wanted to treat her at Cafe Lidia  or bring her to Lilac, the famous food hub in Marikina. And before she leaves the Philippines, I also wanted to give her a little send off dinner. And probably next year, Anne and I would visit her in South Korea. :)

Beautiful Sunday # 171 - And we finally met

My blog has been filled with nothing but my Sunday blogging series. My usual target is at least two posts in a week. One for the blogging series and the other for my monthly book reviews, places visited and other more interesting things. Unfortunately, I'm still adjusting or like I always say, I'm so lousy and poor in time management lately. Maybe my overweight self can also account as another culprit. I guess even my brain is filled with all the cheese and cholesterol I've been taking. Haha Just to break my series of monotonous posts let me write some good random things that happened lately.

1. Coming to work on time on Monday, despite waking up late, traffic and the fact that IT'S A MONDAY - Monday has always been a struggle. Ideally, I should have been more relaxed because of the weekend break. Unfortunately, Saturday and Sunday seemed to be not enough as I age ... and gain weight.

2. Encountered a courteous and accommodating jeepney driver - How often do we encounter one? Despite having a full schedule yesterday, I had the need to drop by the nearby mall to ship some items. The problem with the nearby mall is the location that entails a lot of walking. Despite the short jeepney ride, I still have to endure walking around 2 blocks from the drop off station. Fortunately, the jeepney driver told us that it was his last trip. He took the initiative to verify if everyone is bound to the nearby mall. Everyone was spared from walking because we were dropped off a few steps from the mall's entrance. Thank you Manong! You brought happiness to all your tired passengers.

3. My first order from eBay arrived - If I'm able to sell some of my items in eBay, I should return the blessing by supporting other eBay resellers. I ordered the item last Friday and it was delivered yesterday. 

4. I was able to help two people at the workplace yesterday. - Being able to contribute in the resolution of a problem brings a unique fulfilment for me. Two colleagues were confused over certain aspects of their work. I listened to their sentiments and gave suggestions. I believe I was able to contribute in the resolution process. I felt it when I saw their faces lighten up and they uttered those rare words of gratitude.

5. I enjoy my trips to the shipping centre - When I started selling my items on eBay, my trips to 2go have become frequent. I don't know, but I feel good whenever I'm able to pass my things to its new owners.  Despite subsidising the shipping fees which lessens my profit margin, I feel a degree of happiness when I'm assured that my pre-loved possessions will have a new owner.

6. I had a great lecture yesterday -  Mondays and Wednesdays are my most exhausting days. I have two consecutive classes in the evening. I started lecturing a difficult chapter last night. I decided to focus the entire lecture on the problem solving exercises. I want to prepare the college kiddies to the worst of the worst ;) In the the middle of the class, the kiddies became restless ... in a positive way. I knew at that point that they are bored and no longer challenged. I can confirm that I was able to impart the techniques they need..... I really hope so. Haha

Random Sources of Happiness

Unfortunately, I'm still adjusting or like I always say, I'm so lousy and poor in time management lately. Maybe my overweight self can also account as another culprit. Someone wants to break up with me

My antique Nokia E63 is seriously demanding for a break up. It's wifi connection is no longer functioning. The internet browser takes tons of time to load. Some messages in my inbox are suddenly disappearing. Though its against the will of my screaming empty wallet, I purchased a new battery to resuscitate its last breath. The investment was a successful life saving device though.

As much as I wanted to give your much deserved rest, I can't because a number of my clients seemed to forget their responsibility over me. Please...kneeling before you, don't give up on me. I believe we can still patch up and make things work. In the mean time, allow me to recall our best times. Perhaps, this can serve as my mini tribute for you as well.

My best memories with my Nokia E63

1. You're the most expensive phone I bought in my entire lifetime. I accepted a lot of freelance works and skipped some meals just for us to become together.
2. We have been together for 3 and a half years. You see, I'm a very loyal and committed partner. I never owned any other phone apart from you.
3. Three years? This is the longest steady relationship I had.... with a phone :)
4. We were together in those significant events in my life. My MBA graduation, when I broke a number of  virginity records :) with my firsts (trekking experience, international research presentation, trips to Hong Kong, Macau and Boracay) birthdays that crossed me from my early to mid 20s, and a number of freelance works were made possible because of you.

As I was stuck in traffic yesterday, I decided to clean you up and to my surprise I have been keeping 500++ messages. To my stupidity, I deleted some special messages and I was left with unnecessary messages from work. But I was able to salvage messages that are still worth keeping or I guess just enough to lighten up my day.

The FM 2009 folder is where I keep the messages from my Financial Management Batch 2009 students. This contain words of gratitude and appreciation I rarely receive these days. When my hometown was hit by the typhoon Ondoy, a number of my students surprisingly showed their concern and worry for me and my family. After 2009 though, I decided not to give away my number to my students. As much as I wanted to help my college kids, I also wanted to have peace of mind especially in those hours when all I wanted was a decent and uninterrupted sleep.

Ate Vanjie is a family friend who gave me useful tips to survive my days in Taiwan. My first trip abroad is actually in Taiwan. If not because of a humble research presentation, I would also not experience the thrill and adventure of traveling in a foreign land ALONE. In case Ate Vanjie is reading this, I'd like to express my huge gratitude again.

I was actually expecting one of my godparents, who works as a nurse in Taipei, to help me reach my destination in Taiwan. Unfortunately, my family later learned that I was mistakenly perceived as a godchild who wanted to take advantage of free accommodation. My mother never uttered her sentiments, but I believe she was sad and disappointed. Ummm, pardon some bragging but I was actually booked for a number of nights at Far Eastern Shangri-La Hotel. I even received a suite upgrade, which made me realize that someone out there wanted to compensate me for some intentional or unintentional mistake.

Typographical error brought about by the sender's excitement, it should be "guess" instead of "guest"  This message came from my ever supportive and understanding big boss. He helped and exhausted all means of assistance for my dream presentation. I still remember the day before my flight, everyone in the workplace was in a festive mood. It was the annual employees' awards and everyone enjoyed the night away. I went ahead without bidding goodbye to him. I believe he left late, but he took effort early in the morning to send me some words of support.

I mentioned before that I'm not a fan of forwarded messages. I would rather appreciate self-composed and sincere messages. I only appreciate forwarded messages  if it's powerful enough to inspire or cheer me up in the middle of a sad and tiring day.

This message came so timely as I was getting sentimental over a shallow romantic comedy film. I suddenly found words to defend my immature and occasional hopeless romantic attacks.

The text messages I hated to death. If you want to annoy me, send me this kind of message everyday.

I know this is stupid and shallow but I remember receiving this message in the middle of my sleep. As I was savoring a rare opportunity of getting 8 hours of sleep, I woke up annoyed with another forwarded message. To my surprise though, I was later laughing from a non-sense and naughty joke.

Only my Filipino blog friends could understand the first word in this message. To my foreign blog friends, please don't bother to search for the translation. But I believe, this is one of the most real and sincerest new year wishes I've ever received. LOL

Reading this message again made me realize that it's not after all bad to be stuck in traffic. You get to reminisce the past happy days by cleaning up your inbox.  But seriously, I'm making this appeal to my beloved E63. I admit I have my shortcomings too. I hide you whenever I'm surrounded with those iPhone and Blackberry units. I shut you down whenever I had a bad day and all I wanted was silence. But you were always with me in those turning points of my life. We've been together for so long. Would you just throw away those 3 years?

Reading these books

I bought a paperback copy of this book from Book Sale for only Php 80. I think I acquired the book since last year and it's only now that I'm reading it. Honestly, I'm not liking the book that much and I read a number of negative reviews. Hopefully, I won't end up regretting this read. But regardless, I always enjoy reading while riding the train or any public transportation on the way to work. Anyone who already read the book? I would love to hear your reviews.

Aside from my paperback read, I'm starting to venture in e-books. Jennifer's Smith's The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight is my first e-book. As soon as I arrive home, I held on to my iPad for another reading session.

A Surprise visit that came with a gift

One of my former students dropped by the office yesterday. Happiness! We chatted for a while and she left us with box of my favorite sugar glazed Krispy Kreme. More than the sweet goodies, I always feel happy whenever my former students visit and still remember me.

Mission Accomplished

A report that was accomplished and disseminated on time is one of my trusted confidence boosters. I've been having occassional self-pity issues at work over the past months. However, whenever I'm given the chance to accomplish something, everything seems to fall in the right place again.


Freelance Works are coming

Finally! I've been praying for some freelance research jobs these days. Another work to be accomplished makes me feel that people still trust my abilities. It makes me feel that I have self-worth. The job is quite new to me but hopefully, I will comply with my clients' requirement and I'll be able to learn something new again.

After three days of being away from the city, I'm back with stories and pictures to share. I mentioned in my previous post that I will be out for our annual retreat. I spent three days to a place where anyone can definitely feel being close to nature. The place where me and some of my colleagues stayed was in

Caleruega is owned by the Order of Preachers (O.P.), one of the largest Catholic congregations in the Philippines. The place was named as Caleruega because it served as the birthplace of St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers or more commonly known as the Dominican Order. 

 I love pathways especially if it means having this great view.

The interior of the villas in Caleruega is very simple. What you can see in a typical room are single sized beds, enough cabinets, side table, and the basic comfort room. No telephone, TV, wifi access and all other technologies and luxuries that define city life.  However, if your window gives you this view every morning

then I guess, you will never demand all those conveniences. After all, Caleruega is intended for a spiritual retreat. Here are more relaxing views from our room

A place to fall in love

After three days of being away from the city, I'm back with stories and pictures to share. I mentioned in my previous post that I will be out for our annual retreat. I spent three days to a place where anyone can definitely feel being close to nature. The place where me and some of my colleagues stayed was in

Caleruega is owned by the Order of Preachers (O.P.), one of the largest Catholic congregations in the Philippines. The place was named as Caleruega because it served as the birthplace of St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers or more commonly known as the Dominican Order. 

 I love pathways especially if it means having this great view.

The interior of the villas in Caleruega is very simple. What you can see in a typical room are single sized beds, enough cabinets, side table, and the basic comfort room. No telephone, TV, wifi access and all other technologies and luxuries that define city life.  However, if your window gives you this view every morning

The solution for stress? DESTRESS! Loosen up, unwind, do the things that will make you happy. Teaching has been giving me some reasons to quit and it's not just because of the bulk of work. I have learned to handle deadlines and all the paper works. But when your principles and character that become tested, then there's another kind of tougher stress that lies ahead. Whew! This requires some great deal of decision making.

I started my "destressing"after my 8 am to 5 pm office job last Friday. I treated myself to a Hair Spa and finally, a Hair Cut. Although honestly, I'm not happy with my new look. The stylist made it shorter than I expected. But I have no point to complain now. Everything is done and what I can do is to wait till it grows again. If a member of the male populace is reading this then I would surely get one irritated. LOL Why make a fuss over a simple hair problem? :D

Before and After... how come before looks better?

The destressing activity wasn't over. Or did I just get more stressed with my hair?  I met my friend Anne this morning in our favorite mall. I treated my tummy to a much craved seafood pasta and mango crepe..heaven! Good food brings good mood! After our bulgy belly meal, we finally watched the US film version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I already watched the Swedish version of the film and sorry to say, I preferred it more. 

Though I wasn't happy with the movie, I had a great time with my friend Anne and I believe that matters more. Before Anne and I called it a day, I thought I am going to end up prudent and proud of not being able to buy anything...not until I saw this shirt

Diane destresses

The solution for stress? DESTRESS! Loosen up, unwind, do the things that will make you happy. Teaching has been giving me some reasons to quit and it's not just because of the bulk of work. The bulk of workload I had last week was crazy. Most of them arise from my teaching tasks. The papers to read are drowning me to the fullest. Just when I needed to stay in the office to review papers, my boss sent me to a 2-day seminar. This means I will be away from my computer, papers and other workload. Though I can always bring the paper works at home, this is something I vowed to avoid. I wanted to clearly separate work from home. I don't want to turn our home as an office extension. Home should be a place to rest, rejuvenate and spent quality time with the family. But that seems to be true only in words... How about my working blog friends, are you forced to bring work in your respective homes?

Despite the wrong timing of the two-day seminar, attending one is something I look forward. I learn new things and meet people from different industries. My expectations were high and I was hoping for an exceptional experience, given the fact that the registration fee is quite expensive. Unfortunately, everything turned out to be a regretful experience. Poor logistics and I found some speakers not knowledgeable enough to discuss the topics assigned to them. The organizers were not good in time management so there were idle time during the session. To kill time, I was forced to buy this book

Just when I promised myself to become more prudent this year......

Despite the unpleasant experience, some few good things happened on that two long days of sacrifice. I met my friend Anne and we had dinner in an Italian restaurant. The place was relaxing because I was treated with this scenery

Not really the most fantastic garden in the world, but pieces of greenery in the middle of a busy workplace is enough to relax my always worried and weary soul.

On the second day of the seminar, I decided to meet up my former students. We had lunch together

 We look like we are of the same age, right? ;-) Though our meet up lasted less than an hour, I was so happy to see my former proteges. They all bloomed and turned out to become successful professionals. They are living proofs that I have done something good in my years of existence.

They are life's little but great surprises for me.

Little but great surprises
