food review

It's safe to say that these days, it's not anymore difficult to find a Korean barbecue restaurant. Every city has one, even among nearby provinces in the North and South of Manila. The Korean invasion has taken over the Japanese food joints in the country. I'm not just sure if this will be a trend or fad. Same thoughts I have with all the milk tea places sprouting everywhere.

Last week, a family member celebrated his birthday. It has been a tradition from the maternal side of the family to celebrate birthdays in a nearby buffet restaurant. It's either in Vikings, The Alley or Buffet 101. But truth to be told, I rarely join because I know my capability. I will only overeat ad overstay in the Japanese section. :p But last weekend, I was forced to join because everyone has noticed my continuous absences. :p I have been skipping celebrations for quite some time. I joined them at All4u Grill and Shabu Shabu at SM Masinag. It was my first time to try this unlimited grill place.

A few months ago, I saw announcements from my Facebook feed that Popeyes will reopen in the Philippines. I was thrilled! It eventually subsided when I realized the possibility that its location might be somewhere in BGC, Ayala Avenue or Mall of Asia. Much to my surprise, I learned its first few branches are near the workplace.

Popeyes opens in SM Manila : Is it worth the wait?

I've been wanting to visit the BGC area for Shake Shack. I'm willing to take the inconvenient route to Taguig only for this most awaited burger joint. I planned everything weeks ago, but nothing materialized. Until last Friday, I had the opportunity to leave the workplace earlier. So off I went to see my friend A for another food escapade.

Shake Shack Philippines : A Review

I planned everything weeks ago, but nothing materialized. Until last Friday, I had the opportunity to leave the workplace earlier. So off I went to see my friend A for another food escapade.

Two things I look forward whenever a work week ends. Weekends spent with the family and a great Friday night. A chance to score a great deal from the mall, a slice of cake, tall glass of iced fruit tea and more often than not, a great meal with friends. Last Friday, I had the rare chance to eat out with some workplace friends. We decided to visit Binondo and try The Great Buddha Cafe.

A few months ago. I encountered a Facebook post featuring this Cafe. Its location was quite a surprise. It is situated in the stretch of Juan Luna Street, a few steps from Pasig River dock in Manila and the popular arch of Binondo. The surrounding area is not really the safest place in Manila. I never imagined a grand restaurant to emerge in the area.

In the previous years, my birthday usually falls on a working day. My default plan was either, take a leave or report for work and treat my friends for dinner. Last month, my birthday landed on a weekend. I didn't have plans. All I felt then, I didn't want to spend another birthday sleeping or cleaning up my room. A few days before that weekend, I decided I wanted to have Samgyeopsal (Korean Grill) with my two cousins. At first, I thought of having a DIY Korean grill. I felt reluctant because it might emerge expensive. My cousin also told me, we didn't have the sauce and side dishes to create an authentic Samgyeopsal experience. In the end, my cousin brought me to a hidden and quiet Korean grill in my hometown.

Gui Gui : Another Unlimited Korean Grill

In the previous years, my birthday usually falls on a working day. My default plan was either, take a leave or report for work and treat my friends for dinner. Last month, my birthday landed on a weekend. I didn't have plans. All I felt then, I didn't want to spend another birthday sleeping or cleaning up my room. In the end, my cousin brought me to a hidden and quiet Korean grill in my hometown.

My hometown never fails to surprise me with its flourishing food industry. Every time I move around the area, I would discover emerging food joints. Lilac Street in SSS Village for instance used to be a quiet residential site for the middle class. Today, every street has something unique to offer.  Gil Fernando St. is another case. What used to be a site filled with grassroots, vacant lot and the city government's engineering facility is now a growing food strip. Years ago, no one had probably predicted that my hometown, also known as one of the flood prone areas in the Philippines, will transform to one of the popular food hubs.

Recently, I noticed a growing trend of food parks. It started with the popular weekend food bazaars such as Banchetto and Mercato. (Are those still existing?) After some time, we had our own experience of food trucks. Although the idea didn't sustain in my hometown. Years after, the concept of food parks emerged. It started with Crave Park, which I blogged here. Followed by The Truck Park, I have yet to see. I also saw a smaller version, #FoodTrip Marikina along Gil Fernando area as well. Then late last year, I discovered Carnival Food Park.

The bright lights, cheerful atmosphere, and nostalgic vibe of old school carnival can easily capture anyone's attention. Hence, expect a traffic build up within this area. Apart from diners, passerbys can't help but check out the place.

I went with my friend AK last Sunday. I felt it was quite a mistake going on a weekend because as you can see, jampacked. It was hard to secure seats. Lines are long in most food establishments. I would suggest taking 3 companions to distribute the task of looking for seats and ordering meals. I only have my friend AK with me so we ended with two different orders. AK bought honey chicken wings from Chicken Ways. I took the long lines to try the popular nachos of Señorita Fil-Mex Cantina. Of two dishes we tried, we would recommend Chicken Ways. Senorito's nachos was just average. It's something I can skip if I will visit again. AK also tried Milkshake Lab, which surpassed her expectations.

Setting aside the Sunday night crowd, I had a good experience with Carnival Food Park. But as mentioned, I will probably visit the place on weekdays. I just hope that all establishments are open even on off peak weekdays.

P.S. I noticed a number of netizens seeking the easiest way to reach the place. Here are my recommendations.

With Own Vehicle

Option 1 - Using Waze
Some netizens complained that Carnival Food Park is not yet existing in the application. In case the place remains unrecognized, pin your destination to Tata Motors along Mayor Gil Fernando Avenue instead. The place is across this establishment.

Option 2 - Without Waze
Drive towards Marcos Highway bound to Antipolo, Masinag or Cogeo area.
Make a u-turn after Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall.
Take the street after Yellow Cab Pizza / PS Bank, the street starts the long area of Gil Fernando.

Via Commute

Option 1 - Estimated Cost : around Php 35
Take the LRT 2 and exit on Santolan Station
Take any jeepney bound to Montalban / San Mateo. These routes directly pass along Gil Fernando St., where Carnival Park is located.

Option 2 - Estimated cost : around Php 55
From Cubao (Gateway Mall) or Katipunan (Katipunan LRT Station), take the UV express bound to Marikina (routes of Parang or SSS Village
Alight near the Marikina Sports Center.
Take any tricycle (brown, beige or green) and tell the driver to take you in Gil Fernando St, Carnival Food Park.

Option 3 - Estimated Cost  around: Php 55
From Gateway Mall, take the UV express bound to Antipolo, Masinag or Cogeo.
Alight at Robinsons Metroeast.
From the overpass, you can easily see the light brown / cream tricycles that can take you to the area.

I started typing this post around 2 am, few hours after Christmas eve mass and dinner. My brain is still alive and active. My body must have gotten used to my vacation habits. Sleep in the morning and wake up around lunch time. We'll be in an early road trip on Christmas day. I hope I will not ruin myself. :)

Days before my birthday, I was able to persuade my friend to try a new food hub in my home town. I've been seeing Crave Park early this year. It feels like Mercato and Banchetto, only that the entire place operates on a daily basis. Crave Park's operations starts at 4:00 pm until 12:30 am. In some days, it extends to 1:00 am.

The entire place is enclosed by different food stalls. The center area provides seats and tables for diners. The place also has a mezzanine that provides more seats and a few more vacant stalls. So those who are interested to join, I believe Crave Park can still accommodate new ventures. I collected photos of several food joints that captured my interest.

Flat Bread offers different pizza in smaller dough. They offer the basic melted cheese and different preset toppings of your choice. Range of each flat bread is Php 70 to 90.

Torii Donburi offers the classic Japanese rice bowls and Yakitori. Prices of rice bowls start at Php 149.

Kawaii Kitchen is another Japanese joint that offers pork katsu curry.

If you love grilled sandwiches and cheese, Kwatro Cubanos may work for you. They serve Cuban inspired sandwiches that start from Php 185.

Creamco Creamy serves as the dessert place. They serve fried ice cream that fuses the Italian and Thai styles.

An entire food stall dedicated for tempura products is Tokyo Tempura. They serve a basket of tempura of different variants that range from Php 85 to 120.

The Archipelago is operated by home grown Barrio Fiesta. They offer rice toppings of different Filipino dishes such as pata, liempo, lechon kawali, salted egg and so much more.

Another food stall that fits those who prefer sandwiches. Pulled Meat Bar allows customers to choose from pulled chicken, pork, or beef. Prices of sandwiches here start at around Php 200.

Nitro 7 are nitrogen infused cold brew coffee. I tried one of their non-coffee best sellers, N7 Premium Brewed Iced Tea.

I've been looking forward to try Dabs & Popcorn. They serve corn cobs in different flavor and toppings. I was expecting something like grilled Mexican corn. Turns out, they have a different approach. They serve the usual sweet corn with an array of toppings from the menu to choose from.

I ordered their best seller, bacon and cheddar.

KM 128 offers chicken wings of different flavors. I'm with my friend Anne so there's no question about landing here. Me and Anne are complete opposites in so many ways. The rare chance we have common interest is attributed to chicken or buffalo wings. Hahaha

This was what me and my friend Anne had. Chicken wings from KM 128 and flavored corn cobs from Dabs & Popcorn. My verdict for the chicken wings, 3 out of 5 stars. It was just okay. I didn't found anything special. I forgot what flavor we chose though. Also, I've noticed that they limit the flavor of chicken per serving. Unlike in other food stalls or restaurants where customer can choose more than one flavor for a basket of chicken wings.

The Dabs & Popcorn made it for me. Sweet corn infused with dressing and bacon was for the win. I was expecting something like grilled Mexican corn. Surprisingly, they served something better and unique.

Also in the photo was Nitro's Passion Fruit Brewed Iced tea. I like the different flavor but this is something I can pass on next time.

Overall, I can rate my first experience with Crave Park as satisfactory. We went on a Saturday and was expecting a highly populated place. We arrived a little earlier so we were not bothered or hassled by the jam-packed crowd. Like any other food park, landing on the right food stall is the challenge. I guess I wasn't able to select the best food stalls in my first attempt. On my next visit, I'm willing to skip KM 128 and Nitro 7. I would love to explore and try the other establishments.

I first discovered Milkman Dairy Bar's products via their Instagram account. It was not hard to become curious with their concept of cookie dough. When I saw photos of their product line, I was sure that this is something that will not disappoint. It appeared as a small but promising business, participates in trade shows and weekend markets and for a change, not mass produced.

I made my purchase last week. I have money to spare and I was hoping to share it as a birthday gift for a friend and some family member. I placed my order via their website and everything went out smoothly. I paid via bank deposit, informed the seller and waited for my orders to be shipped. All my orders arrived before weekend. Given that the goods are served in bottles, I was impressed on how the items were carefully packed.

I ordered Red Velvet Oreo, Everything Nice and Grandma's Choco Chip. Among the kids at home,  Grandma's Choco Chip was the favourite. In my case, I love best Everything Nice. Red Velvet Oreo is also good, but I have to say it's my least favourite.

More than the taste, I love the fact that I was not cheated with the contents of each bottle. The bottle was filled with dough. The middle part is not empty. Also, other ingredients such as the chocolate chips. pretzels, peanut butter bits, oreo cookie were evenly spread out. Unlike other bottled goods wherein the most awaited ingredients are only found on the first layer of the spread.

The bottles were also carefully sealed and the most important consideration, expiry dates are provided. Kids and grown ups who remain to be kids at heart (hahaha) will surely love this unique product. As for me, I have to plan my next order with them. If only weight is not a problem, I would love to have this as a weekend treat. This is probably the only downside about the product. It is not meant to boost your self esteem if you have weight gain problems. Hahahaha

A week ago, me and my friend Anne had an unlikely meet up in Makati. The rare times we get to see the Makati malls! We were looking for a dinner place. In the middle of getting lost in Glorietta, (yes, I still have a hard time navigating the circular structure of the mall) we saw posters of the newly opened Wing Stop Philippines. We have been interested with Wing Stop Philippines. We thought it might be expensive given that it was franchised abroad. When I saw the posters along Glorietta, I thought we might give it a try. Since we both have poor navigation skills, it took us a lot of time and effort to finally locate it. The lady receptionist told us to proceed near Mc Donald's, turn right, turn left... I didn't anymore understand the succeeding directions. Hahaha When we were about to give up, we finally discovered its unlikely location. Turns out, it's near the pedestrian crossing to Landmark. If we were told that it's fronting Landmark, the search could have been simpler and easier.

We arrived in time for dinner. Good thing, the restaurant was quiet and unoccupied. (Tita of Manila feels hahahaha) We were able to find a comfortable seat. Ordering was almost easy not until we discovered that they have 14 flavors to choose from. What flavor to eat now? We chose the two-flavored bucket that comes with two pieces of free chicken wings in another flavor. We had Hot Buffalo, Louisiana Rub and Honey Garlic. Among the three, I love best the Louisiana Rub. The flavor was actually recommended by the service crew. Hot Buffalo was also good. It has enough spice although I felt that it has a mixture of lime and beer on the flavor dressing. Honey Garlic was just okay for me. We also ordered two cups of dirty rice and tall glasses of Coke. A little reminder to those who have intentions of trying Wing Stop, don't anymore upgrade the size of your softdrink. The tall glass is too much already, it felt like ordering a large Coke from McDonald's. Take it from me, who is so addicted to Coke. As for the yellow rice, it tasted like Star Margarine rice. Hahahaha But it's good, I actually like how it complemented the chicken flavors we had. All in all, we paid around Php 500 for the entire meal. I guess not bad at all considering the amount of servings.

Other things I love about Wing Stop is the cleanliness, customer service and unique interiors. I have to give 5 out 5 stars for cleanliness. From the walls, floors, trays, to the utensils. The staff are very customer oriented as well. I also like the cool interiors. And before I forget, they have decent wifi connection :p  I'll definitely recommend Wing Stop Philippines to everyone!

As much as I wanted to blog about restaurants and food establishments, I rarely visit any these days. On weekdays, I treat myself to at least one nice meal from my typical list of fastfood chains. On weekends, I try my best to eat healthy home cooked meals. There are times when I resort to food delivery, which surely tastes and feels so monotonous. A few days ago, I received an email from the team behind Pipa Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta. I got curious with their concept of fried pizza. It sounds too oily and sinful, but never mind. Hahaha Life is too short not to enjoy great food. While my glutton self wanted to respond to the invitation, I had apprehensions attributed to location issues. In my mind, this might be another restaurant thriving down south. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the place is right inside my hometown. Yooohoo! Hence, I decided to drop by the place on one lazy Sunday afternoon.

Don't ever wear stripes especially in black and white if you have plans of dining here ;) I made the stupid mistake Hahaha

For a small food establishment, I immediately noticed the variety of pizza and pasta products in the menu. The generous selections are great. Pipa's specialty is their innovated thin crust pizza. Imagine your pizza being fried and later, baked in a classic brick oven. Everything sounds appealing but as mentioned, I was a little concerned about the oil. Fried begets lots of oil leading to cholesterol. While my triglycerides level are still normal, my weight is not. Hahaha I have been overweight but in God's mercy, my last executive check up still related that I can enjoy a sinful life. :P

Don't you just love the names in the menu? :p

The place allows you to assign your own table name. Cute! Ours was named after our favourite pet dog.

As recommended by one of their staff, we ordered Pipa Pasta. We loved this red sauce pasta. The noodles were perfect and we love the creamy texture of the sauce. The only drawback, the serving is quite small for someone with a huge appetite. But with the cost of only Php 99, I believe this is already a great deal.

It was a little challenging to choose which pizza to try. We again opted for their best seller, Many Pacquiao Supreme.

So this is their signature thin crust pizza, fried and baked in a brick oven. Maybe my picture does not do justice, but this was one of the best decisions I made in my entire life. (Okay, I'm a little exaggerated Hahaha) The meat and vegetable were fresh. The pizza sauce was perfect. Not too overwhelming. And best of all, the pizza was not exaggeratedly oily. My "oily" expectations did not happen. Hahaha How come? As proof to it, the paper lining used for the pizza was not totally submerged with oil. The pizza likewise did not cause the usual oil residue on my fingers. Typing this, I suddenly remember my dearest Korean friend, Jenny. My friend can't help but notice that most pizzas in the Philippines consume so much oil. I would surely bring Jenny to this place if I discovered it earlier.

We took home two more flavours, Whitney Houston Pizza (dabbed as the White Pizza) and the Baconor Mcgregor. Both two tasted great and even got the approval of my health conscious parents. My mother can't believe that the pizza was fried at all. Everyone at home loved the "less grease" and the crunchiness of the crust. For those who prefer thin crust pizza, you will love Pipa's version of fried and baked. The crunchy crust was something new for me. As told by Chef Don, they claim to be the first in the Philippines to introduce this innovation. I also learned that Chef Don majored in culinary arts, worked abroad and this pizza innovation was his passion, which in fact became his thesis project and now, a promising business.

I was also introduced to their signature Pipa Spice.  Originally developed by their team, the spice is a mixture of homegrown herbs and spices that complements their pizza.

Also ordered a bottle of John Lemon or home brewed iced tea

And because I was curious with and fried and baked pizza, I asked Chef Don if I can view the process from the kitchen.

All their pizza were made from scratch... The crust is produced and not outsourced from a supplier. I was amazed on how he was able to arrive at the perfect shape and size for the oval pizza. Even though I saw the entire process, I felt that Chef Don did some #NinjaMoves :)

The crust is later deep fried

The ingredients are placed on the pizza and baked in a classic brick oven.

For dessert, we tried the Kim Kardashian. Cookies, ice cream and grilled marshmallows... I died! It was difficult for two persons to finish this treat. :)

The team behind Pipa Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta

I have to crop myself in the photo. #OverweightProblems Hahaha I swear, I look so huge with them. I can pass as the ultimate Tita with them. The thing is, how can everyone remain so thin with all the great pizza and pasta around? Hahaha

Big thanks to Chef Don, Alie and the entire team of Pipa Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta for inviting me.

Pipa Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta is located at 59 E. de La Paz St. San Roque Marikina City. The stretch of E. de la Paz St. is quite long. Jeepneys bound to Marikina Market, Cubao or Barangka, which originated from the routes of Pasig or Calumpang directly passes to E. de la Paz St. An easier alternative take the brown or maroon tricycles near the Marikina City Hall.

Pipa Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta
